Recipe: 3 Ways to Use Mashed Sweet Potatoes

There are hundreds of recipes out there for sweet potatoes, but mashed sweet potatoes are so easy to make and they can be used in so many recipes, we wanted to share a few fun, new ways to use them. You may even have some left over from the holidays already!

1. Spread

Take your mashed sweet potatoes and spread them on your morning bagel or toast, or put them on your leftover Thanksgiving turkey sandwich as a sweet twist on the ordinary!

2. Dip

Instead of, or in additional to, the usual choices of hummus, ranch dressing, salsa, guacamole, and peanut butter, serve a bowl of mashed sweet potatoes with your chips, crackers or crudités as an alternate dip option!

3. Soup

Take your leftover mashed sweet potatoes and repurpose them into a tasty soup, like this one below!

Creamy Sweet Potato Soup


  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 2 small celery stalks, chopped
  • 1 medium leek, sliced (white and pale green parts only)
  • 1 large garlic clove, chopped
  • 1 and 1/2 pounds red-skinned sweet potatoes (yams), peeled, cut into 1-inch pieces (about 5 cups)
  • 4 cups chicken stock/broth (this can be swapped for gluten-free and or vegetarian broth depending on your preferences)
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 and 1/2 cups half and half
  • 2 Tbsp maple syrup
  • Leafy tops of the celery stalks, chopped


  1. Melt the butter in a large pot over medium-high heat and keep an eye on it so it doesn’t burn. You’ll want a pot large and deep enough for all your ingredients.
  2. Add the onion and sauté for about 5 minutes. Add chopped celery stalks and leek, sauté for another 5 minutes or so. Add garlic and sauté 2 minutes, again making sure it doesn’t stick or crisp too much.
  3. Add sweet potatoes, chicken stock, cinnamon and nutmeg; bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer uncovered for about 20 minutes.
  4. Puree soup in a blender until smooth. You will likely need to run it through in several smaller portions, depending on the capacity of your blender. Return the pureed mixture to the pot.
  5. Add the half and half and maple syrup and stir over medium-low heat to heat through. Add salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Serve and garnish with the celery leaves.

If you want to make the recipe in advance, you can prepare it one day early. Cool the soup a bit first, then cover and refrigerate it. Keep the celery leaves separate if making in advance. When you’re ready to serve it, bring soup to simmer again, and then garnish with the celery leaves.

TIP: If you want to do it more than a day or two in advance, you may want to freeze it so everything stays fresh and maintains its flavor.
