Since it’s Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month, this week’s tip focuses on asthma and how to manage your symptoms. Asthma can be a result of allergies, or it can occur independent of allergens.

The scary thing is it can be triggered by anything from dry air to anxiety to pet dander. If your symptoms aren’t under control, you can experience anything from wheezing to shortness of breath or tightness in your chest.

Monitoring your asthma is extremely important: it can help you learn what sets off an asthma attack, and more importantly, how to prevent an attack. Avoiding certain triggers, like being around a smoker or a pet if you’re allergic, means you’ll breathe better and won’t have to use your medication as often.

Monitoring your asthma can also help you become more aware of which triggers are worse, and whether your asthma is worsening overall.

What to do:

  • Keep a journal of your symptoms
  • Track what causes your symptoms
  • Track how severe they are
  • Track how often you need to use your medication

Asthma doesn’t have to control your life. Monitor it, discuss your treatment options with your doctor, and you can get your symptoms under control.
